This workshop is to give a prospective analysis of knowledge gaps, needs for tools, the limits of the available multi-risks management tools in regards to the demand of stakeholders

Forests provide a broad spectrum of essential ecosystem services. They are rich in biodiversity and valuable for water regulation, soil protection and recreation. As well as for providing timber and other non-wood forest products, forests are important for mitigating climate change and for the renewable energy sector. Yet, forests are increasingly affected by three main forest disturbance risk complexes:  droughts and wildfires, windstorms, forest pests and pathogens, and their complex interactions. Though disturbances are an integral part of natural development cycles of forest ecosystems, in managed forests, they are often regarded as disruptive and are frequently affecting not only by forest ecological components but also by the wood-based industries, the forest owners’ communities and the  wholethe whole society.

Climate change are is further accelerating the extent and intensity of these disturbances. The effects of climate change on important disturbance agents such as fire, bark beetles, pathogens and drought is a highly prolific field of study. Less synthetic knowledge is available on interactions among disturbance agents. One of the major challenges for forest sciences are to analyze present and emergent risks and their interactions, to produce survey tools for multi-risks management and to analyze the different strategies for risks mitigation.

This workshop focuses on North-American and European forests that represent more than 20% of the world forest area and brings together many scientific experts in risks in forest socio-ecosystems and also a broad spectrum of decision makers and practitioners.
